Up and Coming: Global Events

UPDATE: This feature has been implemented as halftime events in the game (See patch 0.2.0!)

What are Global Events?

Global Events are a plan to make the game even more dynamic while giving players the chance to make a much-needed comeback in a game.

Global Events happen at specific points in the game and will happen at least once per game, but may happen up to 3 times depending on the number of rounds.  These events will affect all players, and are activated automatically in between player turns.

The event that occurs is different every game, but one theme remains the same – the event will give players who are behind a chance to catch up, while also presenting new challenges for players in the lead to have to adapt to if they want to stay on top.

Huge Upcoming Changes: An Update

Back in December an update was posted describing some of the huge sweeping changes to the battle system.

And while significant changes are still coming, it might be best to explain some of the changes to those changes that are being worked on right now.

See the original post here.

Back in the original post I mentioned changes to the battle system: introducing a ton of new stats, new combat abilities, and promising a lot more options for how players could battle each other in more interesting ways and make meaningful choices along the way. To clarify, that certainly will happen, but I’ve decided to go a different route. So what does the future of battling hold?

New Combat Abilities

This was something too good to pass up. An array of new combat abilities will be available to players in the near future. What has changed is how players will gain access to these abilities. Rather than allow players to choose combat abilities at the beginning of the game, combat abilities will be unlocked through items.

The item store will begin carrying new items which grant access to combat abilities. While holding one such item, in addition to the basic “attack” and “retreat” options, they will be able to use their combat abilities which have a wide variety of effects to make combat more dynamic. Many of the items currently in the shop will be reworked to be more diverse and support these combat abilities.

As a result, another major change will be the addition of the spell power and spell resist stats. Any other stats mentioned in the original post are not planned for implementation yet.

Lastly, note that the combat abilities mentioned in the previous post will most likely be completely redone or removed, as they were intended for a different system.

That’s all for now, as usual leave feedback on these new changes as the hope is that they’ll change the game for the better.

Update: Coming Back Soon!

Hello!

Been a while since this game has been updated, but with things getting settled now you can expect the game to make a full return in all its glory soon!

So what happened?

Well, Unity Web Player has been phased out by most mainstream browser services, so playing the game online is no longer practical. In addition with school and other projects, it has been hard finding time to work on the game further. But with winter break around the corner and the stars aligning correctly, you can expect Battle Squares to make a full return as a standalone downloadable game. All the features you’ve come to know will be there, with new patches coming down the way. There’s still a lot of work to do, but hopefully in the coming weeks the game will improve a lot!

Looking forward to re-releasing the game for you all to enjoy once again.

Hotfix: Patch 0.0.6A!

Just a quick update to the game to help fix some annoying problems that people have noticed, as well as tweak the time out system to make it a bit more user friendly.

GENERAL:

SHHHHHH – The ingame music on the opening menu has its default volume turned down.

NO MORE BOOTS- Players no longer disconnect when they time out 4 times. (This was causing major desync issues with players.)

SPEED IT UP – Players lose 10 seconds off their next turn if they time out, down to a minimum of 20 seconds.

A BIT MORE FORGIVING – A player will no longer lose AP the first time they time out.

ITEMS:

NEW – Ormando’s Greatsword:

Cost: 180 AP

Description: Grants 3 Attack and 5 Defense and grants +10% crit. Cannot be stolen.

A LITTLE TOO TOXIC FOR US –  Keitron’s Toxic Formula: This item has been disabled due to an in-game bug that couldn’t be resolved quite yet.

SHE’S ON VACATION –  St. Lettie’s Grace: This item has been disabled due to an in-game bug.

Bug Fixes:

Swattin’ bugs since 1337.

With the changes to the Timeout system, synchronization bugs for the most part seem to be largely fixed. Still keeping an eye on that though.

GENERAL:

TIME IS MONEY – Each time a player times out, they lose 30 AP.. A friendly reminder that 4 consecutive time outs means you are disconnected from the lobby.

IT’S YOUR TURN IDIOT –  A sound now plays when it’s a new player’s turn. During online play, only the turn player can hear this sound.

EVEN YOUR HEADPHONES SHAKE –  The game now plays a sound whenever a player activates their Earthquake power.

ARENT ALL GAMES LIKE THIS-  The starting square now acts as a free space rather than an Omni square.

BATTLE:

EVENTS:

EVEN MORE UNPREDICTABLE – New random events have been added.

ITEMS:

EXPANDED INVENTORY –  The item shop now displays up to  14 random items!

NEW – AG II Pistol:

SQUARES:

NEW – Void Square:

At the end of each round, this square has a chance to change into any other kind of square (Except reroll squares). Void squares that don’t act like another type of square will by default transport the player’s pawn to a random position on the board, but not activate that square’s effect.

~The teleportation feature of this square will be released later during patch 0.0.6!~

NEW – Court Square:

When a player lands on this square, they pay 15 AP into the pot. They may then select an opponent, and “Sue” them for 10% of their current AP. This action has a 30% chance of success which increases to 80% when the targeted player has the highest NET WORTH in the game. During the last 8 rounds of the game, the court square becomes a blue square.

Reminder: Net worth is not solely determined by how much AP a player has on hand.

Hotfix: Patch 0.0.4A

With the release of 0.0.4 came some issues with online play, so with this update I hope to address those issues and create a more reliable and consistent experience for online play.

GENERAL:

With this hotfix, I decided to roll out some new balance changes for early game AP, so before we get to the technical stuff…

LESS MONEY NO PROBLEM –  Starting AP for all players has been reduced to 50 AP. (Down from 100.)

MO MONEY MO PROBLEMS –  Players gain [ 12 AP]  [ 12 AP + The current round ] for rolling the die, up to a base maximum of 40 AP per dice roll. (This applies before item effects, so more is possible.)

SOME NUMBERS-  During round 1, all players will receive 13 AP for rolling the die. (12 + 1 round).

During round 15, all players will receive 27 AP for rolling the die. (12 + 15).

After round 28, all players will receive a base maximum of 40 AP for rolling the die, before item effects apply.

The idea of these changes was to reduce early game potential and emphasize net income toward the middle and late game phases. Having less AP early on means that landing on an item square early wont have the same snowball potential, but it also brings additional viability into waiting less time to have the AP for a better item.

TECHNICAL:

KEEP IT TOGETHER-  Adjusted the way the game synchronizes so that position updates are more frequent.

REMEMBER THAT FAIL SAFE?-  The “Derailment” fail safe that was added in the base patch has been revamped to more seamlessly move players back to their correct position, and sync this position over the network.

IT GETS A BIT TECHNICAL HERE-  Only the turn player can send gameplay updates over the network. This was an issue in previous versions when occasionally all players could send position updates that were out of date.

KNOWN ISSUES:

This hot fix won’t be the last, and there’s still some issues that need to be tackled.

CAMERA ISSUES-  There has been an occurring issue with the camera moving past the bounds of the game board especially to follow out-of-sync pawns. It’s not game breaking, as the camera should automatically pan back to the correct position after each turn.

Patch 0.0.4!

With this new update comes more changes to powers, battling,  the item shop, and more!

Keep in mind all changes made here are tentative, experimental, and/or highly subject to change. See something you like? Something that can be improved upon? Don’t hesitate to leave a post in the forums! And without further adieu, here are the changes shipped with patch 0.0.4!

GENERAL:

RETURN POLICY –  Items can now be sold back at the item shop for roughly 80% of their original cost.

YOU ROLLED IT –  The game now plays a sound upon rolling the dice.

MORE ICONS –  The behavior icons now correctly show if a player is immune or shell shocked.

BATTLE:

THIS IS GONNA HURT… –  Players can now land critical hits while in battle. Critical hits deal 200-250% base damage to enemies. (Calculated before damage reduction). All players by default have 5% critical chance.

…BUT THIS MIGHT NOT SO MUCH –  Non-critical hits deal 1.1-2.5  1.1-1.8 base damage per attack point.

…OR THIS –  Each point of defense now decreases battle damage dealt by 10%  15% per point (With diminishing returns.)

DONT BE A CHICKEN –  In battle, a player must now attack at least once before gaining the option to retreat.

NO MORE STOLEN LUNCH MONEY –  Players now forfeit 16 10 AP when they retreat from another player in battle.

EVENTS:

EVEN MORE UNPREDICTABLE – New random events have been added.

Switcharoo- Switch spaces with a random opponent.

Through the Wormhole-  Teleport to a random square and activate its effects.

ITEMS:

NEW – Xpired’s Mystery Soup:

Cost: 20 AP

Description: Can be consumed to activate a random effect. But beware.

CHANGED –  Trinket Of The Panther:

Now has a new image.

POWERS:

SNIPPED  Stun has been removed.

NEW – Earthquake:

Creates an earthquake which deals 8 damage to all other enemy players and causes them to be -Shell Shocked- For 1 turn. Players that are -Shell Shocked- do not earn bonus AP when rolling the die and cannot roll a value higher than 7. (Regardless of item effects.)

CHANGED –  Smite:

Now deals 15 damage. (Up from 12.)

FIXED –   The Tornado power can now properly be targeted forward or backward.

Bug Fixes:

Swattin’ bugs since 1337.

NOT REALLY A FIX – A fail safe has been added to prevent player avatars from leaving the board. If the game detects “Derailment” it will reset the player pawn to the starting position.

KEEP IT IN SYNC – At the end of each player’s turn, they are moved to the middle of their current square and their position is re-synced with all players. This helps prevent minor desync issues that could happen with regular lag.
